Cesca Red
Cesca Vicent is a unique property located in the town of Gratallops, found in the heart of Priorat. The estate is owned and operated by Francesca Vicent (Cesca), who is a fifth-generation producer. Her family has been farming grapes in this area since the 16th century. Since inheriting the property, Cesca has become determined to produce a range of quality wine that highlights the true diversity of her vineyard. She began practicing organic viticulture in 1999 and became certified in 2011. Her focus has been to produce wine with as low intervention as possible and pay upmost respect to the land.
To produce Cesca red, all grapes come from the single estate ‘Mas d’en Corral’ which has 30 year old vines. Most of the estate is south-east facing on narrow terraces with good sun exposure. Harvest is completed when the grape variety has reached the correct level of phenolic ripeness; grapes are carefully selected and hand-harvested from small plots producing very low yields.
Harvest commenced first with Syrah in August, then with Grenache in early September followed by Merlot. By mid-September, harvest of the Cabernet Sauvignon commenced and Carignan was ready by the end of the month. The Grenache is harvested slightly underripe by design. At the winery, a pre-fermentation cold maceration is conducted with the skins to maximize extraction and to ensure that fermentation length and temperatures are controlled. Fermentation occurs by use of commercial yeasts. Punch-downs and pump-overs are conducted and the wine is moved to barrel by gravity. The wine matures in 300 litre French oak barrels for 12 months and then is bottled with very little filtration.

Cesca Red is Grenache dominant with Merlot, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine has the liquored red fruit characteristics we love from Grenache: cherry kirsch, red liquorice, strawberry compote. There is a distinct herbaceous note of dried sage and thyme with dried earth and crushed rock minerality. There is an underlying note of nutmeg and clove; likely due to the use of oak in the winery. The wine is densely flavoured and full bodied, with finely integrated tannins and shockingly refreshing acidity that we’ve come to hope for from Priorat. |
