Côtes du Rhone, Gigondas Vieille Vignes
The Boissan estate is located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux. One of the oldest vineyards in the region, established in the 17th century, Christian Bonfils is the fifth generation leading the estate. Owners Christian and wife Cathy Bonfils come from families of generational wines makers in Burgundy. Together, they have established a reputation for their exceptional wines with tireless efforts in organic farming and sustainable practices in the vineyard.
Grown in clay soil with limestone in the slopes and lots of gravel on the terraces, this wine comes from 40 to 50 year old vines of Grenache and Syrah. The grapes are hand-harvested and crushed, then undergo a 2 to 3 day cold maceration. A traditional style of fermentation follows and lasts about 20 to 30 days with daily delestage. About 30% of the resulting wine is aged in 1 and 2 year old barrels for 6 to 13 months while the other 70% is aged in stainless steel vats.

A heady nose is followed by spiced perfumes of blackcurrant. On the palate the initial attack is powerful and strong but quickly giving way to characteristic stone fruit flavours like almonds and prunes. |
