Montefalco Rosso Arnaldo Caprai
Arnaldo Caprai, originally a textile entrepreneur, founded his winery in 1971 by purchasing 12.5 acres of land in Montefalco. In 1988 his son Marco took over the estate to revolutionize grape growing of Sagrantino, a grape that has been growing in the region for more than 400 years. Today they are considered to be a benchmark producer of Sagrantino di Montefalco.
Arnaldo Caprai is further celebrated as a producer committed to sustainable farming practices and recognized as being champions for their winemaking in Umbria. Caprai's inaugural vintage of their Montefalco Rosso is 1975; the vines are trained on Spurred Cordon trellising systems, with a vine density of 5.000-6.000 vines (per ha), yielding 9-10 tons (per ha). At the winery the wine sees 12 months of aging in French oak barriques and a minimum 4 months aging in the bottle prior to being released to market.

Taste: |
This expression of Sangiovese, Sagrantino & Merlot is driven by tart, ripe black and red cherry, red currant, and damson plum. There is a savoury dried herb note of star anise, oregano and black peppercorn to complement the underlying dried leather, fresh turned earth, sweet tobacco and black tea leaf aroma. The wine is dry, full-bodied with refreshing acidity and firm but nicely integrated tannins. |
