Ninfa Maria Gomes Joao Barbosa & Filos
João Barbosa founded his company, João TM Barbosa Vinhos, in 1997. Although this may be considered a young winery in Portugual, Barbosa’s family has a rich history in winemaking. His grandfather founded the famed Caves Dom Teodósio and as a young boy, João would accompany his grandfather to work in the vineyards.
Barbosa produces his Ninfa label at his Porta de Teira winery located in Rio Major, Tejo.
The Maria Gomes vines are planted on rich soils of limestone and clay. The vineyard sites host a Mediterranean climate with influence from the Atlantic. South-facing vineyards that are planted on steep slopes to promote drainage, along with ideal temperature amplitude and maximum sun exposure, are all factors that contribute to the ideal conditions for grape ripening.
Grapes are hand-harvested early in order to maintain their fresh acidity.
At the winery, fermentation and aging occur in stainless steel vats in order to preserve the natural aromas of the Maria Gomes grape variety.

Taste: |
A lively example of Maria Gomes from Tejo; characterized by tart and ripe lime juice, bosc pear, and peach coulis. There are distinct floral notes of honeysuckle and orange blossom with a beautiful underlying salinity. The wine is dry, medium-bodied, with slight phenolic bitterness. |
Food Matching: |
A great pairing for Sushi or Bacalhau (salt cod), barbecued chicken, or fresh salads with feta. |
