Ninfa Tinto Joao Barbosa & Filos
João Teodósio Matos Barbosa founded his winery in 1997, and by 1999 the first vineyard was planted in Vale de Junco, Esperança, Portalegre. The wines were first made available on the global market in 2005, after a small production in 2004 in the vineyard of Valle de Junco. The company’s first vineyard in the Tejo region was planted in 2000, four kilometers from the city of Rio Maior, on a slope of the Serra d’Aires e Candeeiros mountain range. The vineyard comprised 2.5 hectares, and the varieties that were planted were those that were best suited to the conditions: Touriga Nacional, Aragonês and Syrah. In 2009 the company planted the first white grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc and Fernão Pires. The vines are planted on rich, south-facing, calcareous-clay slopes with optimum drainage and great capacity for exchange with the plants, in a Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influence. All this contributes to a good balance of the vines, small productions, concentrated grapes, and a potential for acidity that is the basis for our Ninfa wines, which are fresh and have longevity.
Mediterranean climate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean resulting in large diurnal temperature changes. Vineyards are planted on south facing, mineral rich chalky-clay soils with excellent drainage and exposure to sun. The resulting wines are naturally balanced, concentrated in flavour and fresh with good ageing potential. The grapes are hand harvested when the ideal balance between maturation and freshness are achieved. The fruit is carefully transported to the winery in 12Kg boxes. Grape bunches are hand sorted and gravity fed into stainless steel tanks where maceration takes place for 4 days at controlled temperatures followed by 10 days of fermentation.
