Quinta da Fonte Nova 10 Year Old Tawny Port
João Teodósio Matos Barbosa founded his winery in 1997, and by 1999 the first vineyard was planted in Vale de Junco, Esperança, Portalegre. The wines were first made available on the global market in 2005, after a small production in 2004 in the vineyard of Valle de Junco. Years later, after buying a plot of land on the slopes of Serra d'Aire and Candeeiros, Barbosa planted their second vineyard. They were then able to focus their efforts on completing the construction of two wineries, one in Esperança and another in Rio Maior, which were completed by the Summer of 2007. Their philosophy has always been to approach wine production in the most hands-off, natural way possible.
The vines are grown on the slopes of the Douro Superior in schist soils in proximity to the river. This influence helps the grapes reach good levels of ripeness while retaining their acidity and fresh fruit characteristics. This balance is key. The grapes are harvested and pressed and left for fermentation. As with most Port wines, fermentation is interrupted by the addition of wine brandy and this now fortified wine is left to age in oak. Quinta da Fonte Nova is created by blending wines from several vintages which are further aged for an average of 10 years before release.
